Where Should I Register for Wedding Gifts?

By Staff Writer

Pretty much every department store and specialty shop now has a gift registry feature. And sure, it gives you lots of options, but it can be overwhelming. Before you choose a store for your wedding registry, take a look at our wedding registry checklist:

Check out each store’s return policy. It’s incredibly easy for guests to forget to tell a clerk to mark their purchase off the registry, meaning that you can end up with two blenders, six red hand towels, and three rice cookers. Look for stores that have liberal return policies, meaning that they’ll take back anything that was bought in the store, with no limits on the amount of items or where in the store spend the credited amount.

Consider service. You’re likely to have a few older guests who won’t be interested in checking out your online registry. If any guests come into the store, you want to make sure they’ll have a pleasant experience. If the store you have in mind has questionable service, then question creating a wedding registry there.

Having said that, aim for stores that have easy online registry access. You want guests to be able to check your registry, buy a gift, and have it shipped without having to do more than click a few times. Also, try to make sure that you can edit your registry online. No point in visiting your local Bed Bath & Beyond eight times if you don’t have to!

In the same vein, you may want to make sure that the store(s) you register at have most of their inventory available online. Some stores still cater almost entirely to in-store customers, meaning that when you want to edit your registry at midnight, your stuck with a very limited selection.

Look for national availability. If your wedding guests are coming from all over the country, this is even more important. If you’re set on a regional store, consider adding a smaller wedding registry from a national store to give all your guests the same convenience.

Check out the selection. While your mother-in-law may think that ladies only register at Bloomingdale’s, they might not have what you’re looking for. Check out the merchandise at a few stores to find what you’re interested in before deciding on one place.

Don’t underestimate the selection at medium-level retailers. Most have added lots of very high-end merchandise to their stores to cater to brides who want Lennox and Libbey.
