When Should I
Check My Annual Credit Report?
Q: I know that
my annual credit report is free, but I don't know where to get it or
when to get it. Also, what should I look for in my annual credit report?
A: We're glad that you're thinking ahead and also that you're smart
enough to know to keep an eye on your credit. Identity thieves are
thriving, so it's up to you to make sure that your credit hasn't been
damaged by unscrupulous info sharks. You've got the right idea; the
first step beyond monitoring your monthly bills is to check your annual
credit report.
There are three major consumer reporting companies--Equifax,
TransUnion, and
Experian--and you'll want to
request your report from all three, since each has slightly different
data. While your record at Experian may be perfect, TransUnion might
report something inaccurately.
However, it's a good idea to space out your requests since you're only
entitled to one credit report per year per company. If you request all
three at once, you'll be completely in the dark for the next 12
months--or you'll have to pay a fee to get another copy. As a result,
many experts recommend requesting your annual credit report once each
four months. For example, if you request your Equifax report in January,
you'd wait until May to request one from Experian, get your TransUnion
one in September, and head back over to Equifax in January. This keeps
you in the know year-round--and you may want to mark the dates on your
calender as soon as you get it to remind you.
To get your free annual credit report, you can visit
annualcreditreport.com,
or you can visit the invidual company's site. You'll be asked to provide
some personal information, so be sure that you're on a secure
connection. You'll also be asked whether you want to pay extra to
receive your credit score. You don't have to know this number, but it is
a good gauge of whether you need to improve your credit or not. Getting
your credit score just once a year can be a great investment.
