Bringing the Fun of Wedding Cake
Charms to Your Special Day
Are you looking for a fun way to add something unique to your wedding day?
You may fall in love with wedding cake charms. These "charming" little
relics date back to the Victorian Era, but they're making a welcomed
comeback in some of today's most special weddings. Fortunately, these
charms are still fairly uncommon, so it's a great way to add in something
most guests haven't seen or participated in.
The actual charms themselves are typically in silver, made of sterling
silver or pewter. About the size of a dime, wedding cake charms are
available in a variety of iterations, from four leaf clovers to baby
carriages to horseshoes. Each charm has a unique meaning and symbolizes
both a fortune for the one who pulled it and good wishes for the bride and
groom. For example, a baby carriage charm carries the promise of a child
for the charm-puller and as well as a wish for a happy family for the
bride and groom. While some of the most popular charms currently are
reproductions of Victorian-era charms, you can also find modern charms
that feature things like college degrees.
As the tradition goes, these charms are attached to ribbons and then
inserted into the cake frosting by the baker. Typical ribbon colors are
white and ivory, but some modern brides are coordinating the ribbons with
their wedding colors, ranging from hot pink to soft blue. The charms are
then buried at the bottom of the wedding cake, with the ribbons peeking
out around the edges. Then, the wedding party and special guests take
turns pulling out the ribbons to reveal a charm with a special meaning and
wish for the newly married couple's future.
Some brides choose to have the traditional pulling ceremony at the
reception (following the first cake cutting by the bride and groom), while
others prefer to keep this fun activity to the bridal shower or rehearsal
dinner. That way, the wedding cake charms can be distributed to the
members of the wedding party and even worn at the actual wedding as
bracelets or necklaces. It certainly makes for a memorable bridesmaid
gift! Also, many couples prefer to do the charm-pulling with a cake that
didn't cost close to a grand. (Keep in mind that, yes, your cake will
emerge looking less than perfect. Make sure all the necessary pictures
have been before this part of the evening.) This is a "charming" tradition
that's affordable and fun, so why not bring some vintage character to your
wedding with cake charms?
