America's
Frontier: Alaska's Denali National Park
If you're an outdoor lover looking for adventure
travel in the United States, why not visit Denali National Park?
Considering Alaska is America's last frontier, Denali National Park offers quite
a few thrills. From biking, kayaking, and whitewater rafting, there are
plenty of activities to enjoy at this national treasure. Even though there a
number of organizations that run tourist trips, the area doesn't feel overrun
with crowds by any means. In fact, you may even be able to check out the
bears, moose, and wolves. (Oh my!)
What Is There at Do at Denali?
To start with, there's Mt. McKinley--North
America's tallest peak. (In fact, the park was originally named for Mt.
McKinley before being changed in 1976 when the area was deemed an international
biosphere reserve.) However, the activities you take part in will depend on the
season you visit. In winter, you can enjoy cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing, and even dog mushing. Denali National Park in winter is
straight out of Jack London--with the exception of super-speedy snowmobiles
tearing up the tundra.
In summer and spring, you'll find plenty of
opportunities to take in the gorgeous scenery. From backpacking and day
hiking to fishing, cycling, and mountaineering, there's quite a range of
exhilarating activities for the adventurous traveler. You don't need a permit to
fish in the older section of the park, but keep in mind that the fishing is less
than fantastic. To get up close and personal with some of Alaska's
creatures, you might head to the kennels and visit the sled dogs instead.
Rafting is another cool option. Your best
bet will be to make reservations with a local outdoor adventure company. That
way, you'll be able to get everything you need without having to cart it to the
park yourself. This can include everything from special clothing to oar
boats, inflatable rafts, and even hard-side kayaks, not to mention the river
guides themselves.
