Tilapia
Fish--A Deliciously Light Dinner IdeaAs a healthy fish that's easy
to cook and has tons of taste possibilities, it's no surprise that tilapia fish
is growing in popularity. In fact, you may have had this simple fish already and
not have known it; it's sometimes referred to simply as "whitefish" or even
perch. Still, most grocery stores will label it as tilapia, so if you're ready
to expand your seafood horizons, don't shy away from this inexpensive dinner
option.
This small, light fish originated in Africa, but is now produced around the
world, particularly in Asia. It has a very simple taste, which is why many
people use it. Tilapia fish won't compete with flavorful sauces or side dishes
and it isn't overly "fishy" for those who aren't huge seafood fans. However,
since it's very light, you should buy more than just one fillet for each person;
two to three is often a more appropriate serving size.
Tilapia is most often broiled, grilled, or baked, though it can also be fried or
barbequed. It's very easy to cook and when purchased at the grocery store,
tilapia fish typically doesn't require any extra preparation like skinning or
deboning. (However, if you do buy tilapia with the skin on, be sure to remove
it.) Most recipes require a simple breading and that's it.
Also, tilapia fish shares many of the health benefits of other types of seafood,
but offers a more affordable price. For recipes that call for orange roughy,
sole, bass, flounder, or snapper, feel free to substitute tilapia fish.
