Four Exciting
Things to Do in Santa Barbara
Located conveniently north of Los Angeles on
California's southern coast, Santa Barbara is an ideal getaway. With one of the
nation's top universities nearby, the area has developed into a thriving
cultural center, meaning there are plenty of things to do in Santa Barbara.
1. Catch a show at the Arlington Theater. A traditional single screen venue, the
Arlington Theater shows films and also hosts occasional concerts and guest
speakers. Regardless of what show you catch, the real treat is the theater
itself. From the large open air plaza that makes up the exterior, to the
gorgeous lobby (be sure to check out the vintage glam bathrooms!), to the
stunning interior, be sure to get there early to explore. The interior has been
created to resemble a Spanish village, and the ceiling is a reproduction of the
night sky, complete with authentic constellations. The end result is a charming
experience that's one of the most unique things to do in Santa Barbara.
2. Enjoy the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The many theaters on
State Street show dozens of unique films during the festival, California's
equivalent of Cannes. Typically held in February, the Santa Barbara
International Film Festival brings out the stars, who love the laid-back
atmosphere which typifies this casually glamorous town. For tickets and
information, visit SBFilmFestival.org.
3. Discover Santa Barbara wine country. The setting for the Oscar-nominated film
Sideways, the wine scene here is one of the hottest new spots in the nation.
From the Firestone winery to the smaller vintners along the coast and into Paso
Robles, there are plenty of hidden gems to enjoy along the wine coast, making
wine tasting one of the absolute best things to do in Santa Barbara.
4. Soak up the rays at Butterfly Beach. This is one of the favorite beaches of
locals, and it's also one of the prime areas for dolphin watching. For families
with children, dolphin watching and playing on this scenic beach are some of the
most enjoyable things to do in Santa Barbara County. When you're ready for a
snack (there are no facilities at this beach), head across the street to the
ritzy Biltmore. The prices aren't cheap, but the food (and the views) can't be
beat--especially during their spectacular Sunday brunch!
