Life-Changing
Skill #3: Telling a Great Joke
Let's face it; life can be awkward. Whether
it's a first date, a reunion, or a family dinner, those moments of
awkwardness make everyone squirm. If you'd like to be able to turn these
moments around, it's relatively simple--tell a joke. A good joke can break
the ice and set others at ease. In other words, it's what socially skilled
people often do naturally. Still, telling a great joke is a learned skill,
and we encourage you to start practicing.
Bringing Life to the Party
While great jokes can create fun, spontaneous moments, the jokes
themselves are rarely that spontaneous. In fact, the best joke tellers are
often great because they practice. If you'd like to have a no-fail joke or
two in your repetoire, it takes practice. Tell it to your mom, tell it to
your nine-year-old niece, and try it on the UPS delivery person. The more
you tell it, the better it will get.
The Secret of Success: Know Your Audience
Another trick to telling a fabulous joke is knowing your audience. While a
dirty joke may make your friend crack up when she's going through a bad
break-up, it's not suitable for work. Or a family dinner. Or a funeral. No
matter how good your joke is, it has to be appropriate to the age of the
listeners and the social occasion if you're going to succeed in making
things less awkward instead of more. So, if you've got a particular event
in mind (such as meeting your boyfriend's parents) then find a joke that
would be perfect for the occasion. As prepared and silly as it sounds,
think about it ahead of time. Go online and find some amusing anecdotes,
jokes, or quotes. Pick one or two and memorize and practice them. Add your
own spin and you'll be good to go!
After you've made everyone laugh in a tough situation, don't be surprised
if people start considering you a social star. After all, just knowing that
you've got a back-up plan is often enough to help you lighten up. And keep
in mind that there's no need to be a constant joke-teller. We're simply
suggesting that you pack a social parachute so that you can enjoy the
flight better.
