Staying Fabulous While Flying
Staying fabulous while traveling via airplane can be tough. Celebs
are notorious for getting caught looking less than wonderful in the
airport. And if they can’t hack it, what chance do the rest of us
stand? Take heart, because it’s not that hard to look great on your
flight day and still be comfortable. The trick is to plan ahead so
that your fashion makes your day easier, not more complicated.
1. Dress to make the security line go faster. This
means slip-on shoes, ideally sandals or flip-flops. If you’ve got to
stop to untie, unbuckle, or unfasten, you’re going to slow down the
line–which usually means more stress. Then, once you’re through,
you’ve got to re-tie, re-buckle, or re-fasten–it’s just not worth it.
Stick with slip-ons.
2. Apply the Chanel rule to your accessories. When
you’re ready to go, take one item off. This rule keeps you from
overaccessorizing–which can be a hassle with security checks and get
in the way when you’re trying to cart your luggage around. Who wants
to be fussing with metal jewelry when you could be breezing through?
3. Keep relevant papers close at hand. You know
you’ll need your ID and boarding pass at hand until you’re through
security. So find a pocket and keep them there rather than fumbling
through your purse multiple times. Or, keep them in an easily
accessible pocket in your purse and only put them away once you’re
seated on the plane.
4. Don’t fuss with luggage. Carting luggage on the
plane and trying to cram it into the limited overhead space can be
hugely stressful. You’re stopping everyone else from getting on the
plane, you may need to ask for help, and then you’ve got to worry
about getting down the aisle without accidentally knocking someone in
the head. You’ve got a few solutions:
-
If you want to carry on, make sure your bags are light and small.
Carry-on was designed for small bags, so it’s not surprising that
carrying on big bags is the cause of many luggage annoyances.
-
If you need a large bag, check it. While there are horror stories
of luggage getting lost, the odds are completely in your favor that
your bag will make it back to you. The best part is that while
cynical folks are getting red in the face lugging huge suitcases on
and off the plane (and garnering unfriendly stares), you’ll be
breezing through, looking glamorous and relaxed.
-
If you can’t stand to check, find an airline that doesn’t make you.
For example, Alaska/Horizon Airlines offers “a la cart” service: you
bring your luggage out the loading area, plop it on a cart, and get
on the plane with no worries about overhead bins. When the plane
lands, the cart comes out (relatively quickly in my experience) and
you can grab your bag and breeze through the terminal–bypassing
baggage claim entirely.
5. Wear clothes that don’t wrinkle. You don’t have to wear
sweats to be comfortable. Just don’t wear anything that’s easily
wrinkled, or that has design features that can get in the way or catch
on things (drawstrings, extra long sleeves, etc.). Jeans and a
sweater with slip-on sneakers can work, as can a skirt, a tank top or
tee, and flat sandals.
Travel should be fun and glamorous, and if you take a few minutes to
prepare yourself (and your wardrobe) to travel, it can be. So, hop on
board, enjoy a ginger ale (they can help soothe the stomach and
they’re fabulously low-key), and become the stress-free jet-setter
you’ve always secretly hoped to be!
