Life-Changing
Skill #1: Sewing on a Button
Have you ever tossed out a garment
because a stray button popped off? It wouldn't be surprising, because lots
of women (and even more men) do. However, it's an easy fix--it takes less
than five minutes when all is said and done. Why do women engage in this
kind of self-sabotaging behavior? Some do it because they think they can't
do it right and others think they'd have to spend a lot of time buying
needles and thread. Why waste the time and money, right? Because
otherwise, you're throwing clothes out the window. At Utterly Fabulous
Network, wasting cute clothes is something we simply don't stand for.
And keep in mind, it's not just about frugality, even though that's one of
the major benefits. It's about keeping and maintaing things of value,
things you care about, and things you spent your precious hours at work in
order to purchase. To simply toss out hard-earned or treasured items
simply because of an easily fixable surface flaw is to disrespect
yourself. Likewise, think about what that action says about you. Do you
discard things, experiences, and people too easily? Transform yourself
into the kind of woman who surrounds herself with the things she loves and
takes pleasure from. Sew the damn button back on.
What Do I Need to Learn Basic Sewing?
Surprisingly little. You need a needle and thread, both of which you
probably have, pinched from some classy hotel that offers mini sewing kits
in the room. From there, you can try trial and error, though it's not
recommended because something so small in scale and so full of
finger-pricking potential can be frustrating. Instead, try the easy
route--ask someone who knows to give you a half-hour crash course. They
can show you how to make a straight stitch, sew on a button or snap, or
fix a small tear. You can also buy a how-to book; there are plenty out
there, and the investment will probably pay for itself after you save just
one garment.
It's More Than Just Sewing on a Button
Don't think that stray buttons are the only things that simple sewing
skills will fix. You can hem a skirt or a pair of pants so that they hit
you in just the right place. Trust us, you will never shop the same way
again! You can sew custom curtains to match those fabulous new bed linens.
Hell, you can even fix popped seams in less than half an hour. This skill
becomes a real life-saver when you're traveling. If you had the perfect
blouse picked out for an important presentation and a button or snap pops
off at the last minute, you might be in big trouble. If you didn't have
the chutzpah or skill to sew that button back on, you'd have two ugly
options: wear it anyway and hope no one notices, all the while touching
the spot self-consciously and drawing awkward attention to yourself, or
rush out and make a mad dash to buy a replacement. Seriously, save
yourself the stress and practice sewing on a few buttons and making a few
straight stitches today. That way, when the unthinkable does happen in an
emergency situation, you won't even sweat it. You'll have the confidence
to handle the situation--see, you're getting more self-sufficient and
composed already!
