Renewing Your Wedding Vows--The New Etiquette

Renew your wedding vowsWhether your first wedding was an all-out bash or just an elopement in Vegas, renewing your vows is a beautiful way to reconnect with that special time. However, the etiquette rules of a second ceremony are totally different--and sometimes totally confusing. To make your vow renewals as special--or even more!--than the first trip to the altar, check out these quick etiquette tips.

1. It's "our" day. Yes, it's your day, but it's his, too. If you're like most brides, you were the "star" of your first wedding. This time, you're a couple. Let your husband have a say in the planning and turn the whole thing into a bonding experience.

2. Gifts aren't required. People were generous to shell out the first time--don't ask them to reach into their pockets again. Even if you didn't get any presents the first time around, renewing your vows isn't a chance to register for things you didn't get. Remember, it's a ceremony to celebrate your love--you aren't owed anything. If friends or family decide to get you gifts, send thank you notes as normal, but if they don't, forget about it.

3. If you're hosting the wedding (as opposed to your children, parents, or friends), then it's your job to host any showers or parties that along with as well. Also, don't expect a bachelor or bachelorette party. It's not appropriate and it's not necessary.

4. You can be as elaborate or low-key as you want. If you want the whole she-bang with dress, cake, and three-piece band, go for it! On the other hand, if you want an intimate ceremony with just close family, that's perfectly acceptable as well.

Renewing your vows can be a beautiful way to celebrate an anniversary, deepen your commitment to each other, or just bring together family for a special occasion. So go ahead an enjoy the freedom and create your perfect day--without all the stress of a wedding!
