Rainy Day Party Dos and Don’ts
As the rainy days continue well into
spring, savvy hostesses aren’t delaying their parties for warmer
weather, they’re simply adapting them. Here are a few quick dos and
don’ts for hosting fabulous get-togethers in not so fabulous weather.
Do have a place for
guests to leave wet umbrellas and coats. A coatrack and umbrella stand
are the ideal solution, but if you’ve just got a tile entryway,
that’ll do well enough. If not, grab a plastic tarp to cover your
carpet or wood floors so that guests won’t feel bad about bringing in
wet items.
Do let guests know
when they enter if you expect them to remove their shoes. Although
normally this is frowned on, etiquette can be bent if it means saving
your floors from damage.
Don’t let guests
leave while even slightly intoxicated. Alcohol and wet road
conditions don’t mix.
Do have hot drinks
ready to serve guests who are coming in from the cold. Hot tea,
coffee, and cider are perfect! Wine (cabernet
sauvignon always adds elegance to a party) is also appropriate for
late afternoon and evening.
Don’t let your house
or apartment get too hot. Resist the urge to crank up the heat; once
everyone’s inside, the place will likely start to feel more like a
steam room than a cozy retreat. Anything above 70° is probably too
hot.
Do direct guests to
the bathroom after being in the wind and/or rain, rather than simply
hauling them in to meet everybody else. A simple, “The bathroom’s to
the right if you want to freshen up” will do since it keeps your
guests in the driver’s seat.
Don’t fuss too much.
People came to have fun, not worry about the weather, their frizzed
hair, or whether galoshes are appropriate indoor wear.
