Spring's Newest Shoes: Platform
Wedges and Cork Heels
Some looks seem to go perfectly
with spring, and maybe that's why they return every few years at the first sign
of sunshine. Case in point: cork heels. Just as they piqued interest
a few years ago, cork heels and wedges are making another comeback. While
this trend is becoming a bit old-hat, we can't blame designers for loving the
fresh, organic, and decidedly fun look of cork.
Incredibly lightweight--and
thus ideal for platform wedges--cork is young and hip without being ridiculous.
The natural look of cork provides a wonderful counterpoint to shoe styles that
are a bit funky. Cork heels can be seen in spring shoe lines from Salvatore
Ferragamo, Bandolino, Nine West, Oscar de la Renta, Cole Haan... need we go on?
What to Look for This Year
Look for luscious detailing and
embellishments! From gold details (Ferragamo in particular) to ethnic
applique effects, this year's cork-accented shoes are heavily influenced by the
boho trend that's been waxing and waning recently (sometimes, it seems, in
tandem with Sienna Miller's mood). Whether faux-stitched or painted on, floral
patterns are perhaps the biggest surprise and the newest look. In terms of
color, most of spring's cork heels are subtle, relying on texture and shape for
distinction rather than bold hues.
How to Wear Platform Wedges
and Cork Heels
Cork wedges are the domain of
the young, but older women can get excited about subtle cork heels and small
platforms. Perfect for an elegant afternoon, these fun shoes are more for
daywear than night-time events. Platform wedges are great for showing off
legs, and work well with both floaty sundresses and this year's longer shorts.
These detailed heels look best with simple pieces and great accessories.
