Navigating the Bachelorette Party Guest List

Go out dancing for your bachelorette party! It used to be that if you were the hostess of a bachelorette party, your most challenging responsibility would be tracking down your friend's friends. This often involved subterfuge, sneakiness, and sometimes petty theft. (She didn't really use that DayPlanner, and you needed the number of her high school best friend!)

Fortunately, things have changed, the rules have relaxed, and you can leave the MacGyver tactics behind. (Don't worry, you can always keep up on your skills by trying to swipe her copy of InStyle.) Now, it's considered acceptable--and even preferable--to simply ask the bride-to-be to provide you with a list of names, numbers, and/or email addresses.

One major ancillary benefit to this is that you don't have to worry about inviting frenemies--those acquaintances that are in the bachelorette's regular contacts, but who she'd rather slit her wrists and bleed on her wedding dress than socialize with--much less share a gummy penis with.

A great benefit of being straight up and asking for a list of contacts is that you can get email addresses from the bachelorette. When you send email invitations, bachelorette party-goers tend to respond more quickly. Plus, you can send out a reminder (Evite is great for this!) without seeming pushy.

However, all rules go out the window if you wait until the last moment. So, start asking for those contacts early! This gives you time to follow up with a busy bachelorette who insists she'll email you the list "as soon as I get a chance." Here's a summary of what you need to do to get the guest list rolling:

1. Ask the brides for a list of guests, complete with phone numbers, addresses (if you're sending out old school postal invitations--how retro chic of you!), and emails.

2. Get the invites out ASAP.

3. Do a follow-up call on any non-responders a couple of weeks before the bachelorette party.

4. Voila! Instant bachelorette party hostess--it really can be that easy!
