Choosing the Perfect Wine: Moscato
"The wine urges me on, the bewitching wine,
which sets even a wise man to singing and to laughing gently and rouses him up
to dance and brings forth words which were better unspoken."
-Homer
If you're looking for a dessert wine that can
truly satisfy a sweet tooth, try a moscato (also called a muscat). Made
from Muscat grapes originating from the Mediterranean (think Portugal, Spain,
and Italy), moscato has a strong peachy flavor, subtle rose petal scents, and
even honeydew undertones.
Different varietals can result in wines that
range from rich and thick to light and fruity. Color can also range from light
gold to reddish brown depending on the grape used and the amount of aging
applied. Asti Spumante is made from the
Muscat grape, and this sparkling wine has a light, fruity taste and a low
alcohol content.
You can drink this wine alone, or with fruits,
sorbet and light cheeses. Always keep in mind that they call moscato a dessert
wine for good reason; it is not recommend that you serve this sweet,
floral-infused wine with dinner. In this capacity, though, it is a pure delight.
Our favorite moscato occasion? Sipped from crystal glasses in a warm
bubble bath with candles all around. Like we said, pure delight.
