Making Jewelry to
Match Your Wardrobe
Making jewelry is the ideal hobby for the crafty
fashionista on a budget. With some basic supplies (also called "findings")
and a few dollars worth
of beads, you can create earrings, bracelets, and necklaces that will have
everyone talking! Best of all, you can custom create pieces of jewelry
that are one of a kind and that perfectly complement your favorite outfits.
All it takes is some time and a lot of creativity!
To get started, you'll need to get organized
first! Most craft stores sell clear plastic divided boxes, perfect for
storing beads, fasteners, findings, tools, and more. You can also use
clear film canisters or even a tackle box. Basically, you want to be able to see
all of your beads and findings--that's how you'll get your best ideas!
Next, it's time to head to the craft or bead
store. Your tools will probably be most affordable at craft stores, but the best
selection of beads (and most likely, more personal attention) will be found at
bead stores. Here's a short list of the basic tools you'll need:
- Needlenose pliers
- Roundnose pliers
- Wire cutters
Next, choose a project. If stringing beads
appeals to you, try a basic necklace. If you'd like something fast and
easy, go with a cute pair of earrings! Then, choose your beads. Keep
in mind that bead stores can be totally overwhelming--there's so much to see and
you'll find a ton of cool things! Keep it simple, though, and don't go
overboard. Get just the basics for your first couple of projects.
While it's not for everyone, it can help to go
in with a plan. Decide ahead of time what kind of piece you want to try
and what colors you're looking for. Got a dress that could use a great pair of
earrings? Go with the intention of finding beads that will match that
dress. You'll find it a lot easier to navigate the store with an idea in mind.
You can always choose something else if the mood strikes, but going with a plan
can give you a place to start.
A few basic tips for making jewelry:
- Use practice materials first. You may
need to try something a few times to get the shape just right, so work with
inexpensive materials while you perfect your technique.
- Work in good light. It can make a real
difference in your technique, plus if you're working with beads that have
subtle color differences, you'll need excellent light to nab the right ones.
- Strive for perfection but don't demand it.
Don't expect all your projects to be perfect, especially in the beginning.
Embrace the individual quirks or flaws of your pieces while you work to
improve your technique.
