The Look of Love:
What Your Pupils Are Saying
If
you've always believed that the eyes are a window to the soul and adored romance novels where the lead characters
can read each other's eyes, you'll love this: it's all true. As scientists
have known for years, your eyes--or more specifically, your pupils--can reveal
whether or not you're in love. More importantly, they can reveal when someone
else is looking at you adoringly. Ready for the secret?
When we see something we like, our pupils
dilate. (In other words, the black spot in the center of your eye gets bigger.)
It's the eye's way of taking in more of this attractive object. The study of
pupils (also known as pupillometrics) has revealed that people's pupils
unconsciously expand when attractive stimuli is placed in front of them.
Since people can't control their pupils, it can be pretty telling when your
lover is staring at you with dilated pupils.
Before you grab your boyfriend at stare him
down, though, keep in mind the following caveat. Pupils also expand in
low-light conditions, such as dimmed rooms and candlelit areas. You can't
always take dilation as gospel if the conditions are predisposing your love
interest's pupils to enlargement.
Can Your Pupils Influence Your Lover?
Pupillometrics has also discovered that
having dilated pupils makes you more attractive to other people.
It's a win-win situation when you're attracted to someone and you both look into
each other's eyes. Your pupils are enlarged, and you instantly look more
desirable. Can you make someone fall in love with you by gazing at them
all day? Probably not, but you might think twice about how much lip gloss you
need before you run into your crush. In the end, it's all in the eyes.
