How to Care for
Curly Hair: Four Tips That Can Save Your Style
Curly hair is a blessing and a curse. On
one hand, you've got automatic style that other women spend hours (and
tons of money!) trying to duplicate. On the other hand, though, few people
know how to care for curly hair effectively. Caring for curly hair
requires a separate set of rules, so check out these common guidelines to
make the most of your fabulous curls:
1. Don't brush your hair. Brushing curly hair adds unwanted volume.
Instead, try finger combing your locks; not only is it easier than trying
to run a pick through your tresses, it helps keep your curls looking rich
and natural. A wide-toothed comb is also a good option.
2. Don't wash your curly hair every day. The natural oils of your scalp
help tame your curls, and every time you wash, you remove those oils.
Unless your scalp is extremely oily (which is a natural predisposition and
not an indication of your hygiene habits), you can easily go two days
before washing, and possibly three.
3. Avoid using excessive product. This is for two main reasons. One goes
back to the last guideline--adding products means that you need to wash
your hair more often. Less product equals less frequent shampooing, which
means natually tamed curls and a low-maintenance look. The second reason
is that natural waves and curls are in--sticky, crunchy, and overly gelled
or sprayed curls are out.
4. Invest in products designed specifically for curly hair. Sunsilk and
Pantene Pro-V both offer excellent shampoos and conditioners that are
designed to tame frizz while allowing your curls to shine.
