Tips: Use Old Books to Add Style and Character
If you're tired of home
decorating tips that require extensive physical labor (have you ever tried to
sand a bookcase?) or expensive purchases, we've got a new angle for you. You may
already have everything you need, and if you don't, supplies are a few bucks
away. If you're looking to add a homey yet sophisticated feel to your home, put
your old books to work for you!
Repurposing books as home decor is all up to your creativity. There are pretty
much no limits to what you can do with them. Still, we've got a few ideas to get
you started:
1. Stack your favorite hardcover coffee table books next to your bedside for a
unique nightstand or next to your couch for a side table that shows off your
interests.
2. Stack a few titles under a simple table lamp to add height and style.
3. Lay titles on their sides for easy bookends.
4. Drill a hole through a stack of titles you've already read and create a
one-of-a-kind lamp. The supplies you need can be found at any home improvement
store.
So, how do you find books to decorate your home with? If you're an avid
collector, you're probably already surrounded by them, from overfilled bookcases
to extra boxes of paperbacks under the bed. If you're a non-collector, don't
worry--starting a collection is easy and cheap. Used bookstores are your best
bet. Look for books that blend with your decor, that all pertain to a specific
subject, or that are the right size for your needs.
For even bigger bargains, check in with your local library. Many branches have
"Friends of the Library" organizations that hold annual or semi-annual book
sales. The biggest bargains are often found near the end of the sale, when
leftovers are discounted and you can snatch up a bag of books for as little as a
buck or two. As far as home decorating tips, that's about as cheap and chic as
you can get!
