Climb Diamond Head for Hawaii's Best View

Gorgeous Diamond Head at sunsetDiamond Head is one of Hawaii's biggest tourist attractions, but it still manages to maintain a sense of natural awe. Located on the island of Oahu (where you'll also find the highest percentage of tourists and designer stores), Diamond Head is a volcanic crater. If the view of Diamond Head from locations around Honolulu (especially Waikiki) isn't breathtaking enough, try checking out the majestic view from Diamond Head itself.

Protected as part of the Diamond Head State Monument, you'll have to pay a minimal fee to get into the park. Once you've entered, you're free to follow the Diamond Head Trail to the top for an incredible view from the observation area.

Climbing the Diamond Head Trail
The trail is often labeled as "easy" or "moderate," but it's actually semi-challenging. Uphill all the way, the trail is rocky is places and definitely not flat. You'll also encounter a few sets of long, steep stairs, so be prepared; one set of stairs is indoors and curves around a narrow tunnel--stick to the left where the handrail is. One final challenge lies in getting out of this indoor stair tunnel--you'll need to climb out of a somewhat awkward opening to get to the true top. While those who are in moderate shape will have few difficulties, seniors and those carrying a lot of weight might to forgoe heading all the way to the top of Hawaii's famous Diamond Head.

However, once you're there, the view is well worth it. You'll get a one-of-a-kind glimpse of Oahu and the Hawaiian coastline. Many travelers recommend making the 1.5 hour (suggested time) hike in the morning, as there are few shaded areas on the Diamond Head Trail. Another great option is to hike Diamond Head in late afternoon and catch a sunset from Hawaii's tallest point.

Diamond Head is set a few miles away from Honolulu's hotel area, so many people take a cab in to the park. Once you get back down, you'll have a great chance of finding an available taxi for the ride home, as many cab drivers cruise the area and wait for passengers.
