Cell Phone Manners
in the Workplace
Too
many times it seems like cell phone manners have gone the way of the dodo and
super low-rise jeans. Whether it’s inappropriate subjects being talked about or
ignoring clients, it’s time for a primer in cell phone manners.
Cell Phone Manners Rule #1: Keep X-rated subjects and language behind
closed doors. Just because you want to talk about your sex life in detail via
cell phone, doesn’t mean that everyone in the office wants to hear it. Not only
could this cell phone no-no be offensive to those in your vicinity, you may lose
your authority or even potential company clients.
Cell Phone Manners Rule #2: Not all calls have to be answered. Just
because your cell phone rings, it doesn’t mean you have to answer it. This is
especially true if important meetings or even casual face time with your boss.
If you’re expecting a truly important call, set your phone to vibrate and then
screen. Also, mind your manners and explain to any put out coworkers or clients
why you’re checking your phone every 10 minutes.
Cell Phone Manners Rule #3: Consider your surroundings. If you’re in a
quiet conference room, keep your phone off. This level of manners should be a
matter of common sense, but it isn’t. Mind your manners and keep your chatter to
a minimum in quiet places such as offices, restaurants and cafes, and even in
some outdoor areas. If you must be on your cell phone, lower your voice and keep
the call brief. Also, make sure cell phone ringers are set to vibrate.
